Your worst deceit wasn’t the occasional kiss or the occasional hug
It wasn’t the words or the phone calls
It wasn’t the time we spent together or the meals we shared
Your worst deceit had nothing to do with you
But it had everything to do with love
And it’s not the “I love you” that you uttered
But the “I love you” that I uttered
Yes, your worst deceit had everything to do with my love for you
I said I loved you in every way I could
Even when it was hard, I loved you
And in your best effort to keep people at an arm’s length you loved me back
And the fool I am, I got drunk in that love
I danced in its rain and I basked in its light
And when it was dry and the wind started to blow I still loved you.
But the dust settled and the skies cleared.
Only for me to realize that your best deceit was me
